The BEST Lab has two major theme areas. (1) The Berkeley Expert Systems Technology (BEST) Lab addresses cutting edge research in applied Artificial Intelligence, Expert Systems and Information Technologies. (2) The Berkeley Energy and Sustainable Technologies (BEST) Lab focuses on sustainable communities, sustainable product design, alternate energy and appropriate technologies.
The BEST Lab is located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of California at Berkeley under the direction of Professor Alice Agogino.

BEST Labbers featured in the Daily Cal
Congrats to BEST lab members Maha Haji and Kimberly Lau, who are featured in UC Berkeley's Daily Californian newspaper! The Daily Cal released an article in September 2009 about the work they are doing to generate power in the gym. This project involves retrofitting the elliptical machines currently used in the UCB Recreational Sports Facility with new technology to convert "people power" into usable energy for powering the RSF.

UCB and PPN receive funding from Department of Energy
The Pinoleville-Pomo Nation is a Native American tribe located in Northern California. Since 2008, the Tribe has worked with UC Berkeley on several projects, ranging from design of sustainable housing to research into renewable energy production on Tribal Lands.
In August 2009, the PPN was awarded funding from the Department of Energy to conduct a feasibility study for renewable energy production on Tribal lands in Ukiah and Lakeport. The funds will be used to assess potential for creating a renewable energy utility and to offer training programs for interested Tribe members. The funds will also be used to create conceptual designs for a renewable energy system composed of the following energy sources:
* Micro-hydro
* Geothermal electrical
* Geothermal heat pumps
* Biomass
* Biogas
* Solar electric and thermal
* Wind power
Congratulations to the PPN and UCB!
BEST Labbers at ASME-IDETC
Congrats to BEST lab members Celeste Roschuni and Lora Oehlberg, who both gave papers at the 2009 Design Engineering Technical Conferences and won 2nd and 4th places, respectively, in the graduate student scavenger hunt!
BEST Labber wins award
On June 16, BEST lab member Lora Oehlberg was awarded the Apprentice Faculty Grant Award by the Educational Research Methods (ERM) Division of the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE). She received the award at the ERM Brouhaha in Austin, TX, during the ASEE Annual Conference.
