---September 24, 2009: Support the UC Walkout and Teach-Ins!

Support UC workers and faculty in demonstration against student fee increases, layoffs, furloughs, and paycuts. In solidarity with the University Professional and Technical Employees, along with other UC workers, Tobias supports the walkout.

---August 2009: Surfboard Cradle-to-Grave Cited in the Newest Surfing Magazine

Tobias's Surfboard Cradle-to-Grave Project was cited by Matt Walker on page 76 of the October 2009 issue of Surfing Magazine. Pick up the mag at the nearest surf shop, or see a preview of the issue here.

---August 2009: PPN Receives Stimulus Funding!

The Pinoleville Pomo Nation has received funding from the Department of Energy to conduct a feasibility study for renewable energy production on Tribal lands in Ukiah and Lakeport.

The funds will be used to create conceptual designs for a renewable energy system composed of the following energy sources:

  • Micro-hydro
  • Geothermal electrical
  • Geothermal heat pumps
  • Biomass
  • Biogas
  • Solar electric and thermal
  • Wind power

Tobias will serve as the Project Manager, and will work on in the development of the renewable energy plan with Ryan Shelby.

---August 2009: CARES on Triple Pundit

An article about Community Assessment of Renewable Energy and Sustainability was posted on Triple Pundit. Written by Tobias, this is part of his continuing work with the popular blog.

---July 2009: Presentation to Pinoleville-Pomo Nation Tribal Council

The Cares4Pomo team has finished the conceptual design for the Prototype House for the Pinoleville-Pomo Nation; Tobias, along with team members Yael Perez, BT Nguyen, and Dave Rhoads, present the design to the PPN Tribal Council in Ukiah. The presentation included a physical model, as well as a set of posters outlining design features and energy/water consumption.

---June 2009: UC Berkeley and Pinoleville-Pomo Nation Partnership Website

---May 2009: Bears Breaking Boundaries Award

Tobias Schultz and Ryan Shelby's submission to Bears Breaking Boundaries, received an Honorable Mention. Out of over 400 submissions at the Bears Breaking Boundaries competition, the Pinoleville Pomo Nation project won honorable mention in the Curricular Innovations category and CARES (Community Assessment of Renewable Energy and Sustainability) was a finalist in the Information Technology category.

---May 2009: UCB/PPN Partnership featured in Forefront

UC Berkeley's Forefront magazine released an article about the work CARES is doing with the Pinoleville Pomo Nation (PPN) to co-design culturally inspired, sustainable homes for the PPN. The homes will utilize grey water irrigation , rainwater capture systems, natural lighting, solar water heaters, PV systems, and geothermal heat pumps. Read the article here.
