Invar Manufacturing in Trenton, Ontario is a world class job shop that performs precision manufa cturing, on specialty parts, products, and systems. This facility exhibits the internal departm ent collaboration necessary to operate a world class job shop for precision manufacturing. Inva r is a specialized job shop that makes customized parts for several large companies and governme ntal departments. The jobs and part specifications vary from day to day depending on customer o rders, therefore the operations must be flexible in order to accommodate a variety of customer j obs. There is not a set product at Invar, customers and customer orders change from day to day. Ther efore, in the manufacturing contract shop the key word is "flexibility". The end product of a c ontract shop can vary from the machining operation of a customer supplied piece of material, to the provision of a series of total systems incorporating many parts from in-house and other sour ces. Thus, Invar staff and personnel must be able to quickly adjust to necessities of their cur rent job orders from week to week and day to day. The plant floor at Invar is organized into three main areas: the manual area housing mills, drills and lathes; computerized turning centers, and horizontal and vertical machine centers. Process engineering tells the shop floor which machines in which of the three areas will run a customer order. Each customer order has its own associated process plan detailing how it will move through the shop. It is the production planning and control's responsibility to schedule the implementation of that process plan. Through this process Invar is able to complete jobs and deliver parts and product's to their customers.
