ELIZA and ELIZA-Like Programs

ELIZA (Weizenbaum, J. (1966). "ELIZA- A computer program for the study of natural language communication between men and machines." Communications of the ACM, 9:36-45. ) was one of the first well known AI programs written. The author was Weizenbaum who became an outspoken critique of AI, partially due to the unsettling response to his ELIZA program (Weizenbaum, J. (1976). Computer Power and Human Reason. Freeman, San Francisco).
