The University of California at Berkeley (UCB) welcomes the opportunity to participate in the Siemens Science and Technology Competition as a regional site. The following proposal will outline the specifics of how the competition will be organized and the academic benefits the participants will receive by attending a program on our campus. The principal tasks of our program are as follows:
to develop a program for the Regional Finals;
to serve as host to participants, (finalists and semi-finalists) mentors, and parents;
to involve local high school students and teachers representing Advanced Placement programs; and<
to introduce the participants to the University of California, Berkeleys academic programs and rich cultural environment.
We plan to develop a parallel program (Saturday, November 6, 1999) for teachers and students from local high schools involved with the teaching and learning of rigorous science curriculum. We will invite 20-25 teachers and/or administrators from schools working in partnership with UC Berkeleys outreach programs: MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) and the Berkeley Pledge. Each teacher will bring two to three of his or her high-achieving students from groups that are underrepresented in the sciences, to participate in the competition weekend. Students from UCBs Coalition for Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science and Engineering will help host this activity (see page 3 of this proposal for a further description of the Coalition). The morning program for this group will include a welcome breakfast, a tour of the campus, presentations by representatives from UC Berkeley Admissions, and visits to campus science laboratories with faculty/student researchers. In the afternoon, the local students and teachers will join the Siemens competition semi-finalists and finalists at the luncheon scheduled after the Saturday morning presentations. This will be an opportunity for the local high school students to meet and talk with the participants in the competition. After lunch, Coalition students will guide the local students and teachers through the Siemans students displays and winning exhibits.
