Survey

In Spring 2005, the BDRI Working Group and EVC&P Paul Gray sent our a request to Chairs, Deans and ORU Directors to identify key researchers and research units who had a foundation of research in diversity and inclusion.

We recognize the survey is incomplete and may have errors, but thought it would be useful as a starting database for faculty interested in potential collaborators on research grants or the BDRI Faculty FTE proposal process. Please send any corrections or additions to Sarah Nathe Sarah at:

Research Centers

Center/ORU Mission

American Cultures Center The American Cultures requirement is a Berkeley campus requirement, the one course that all undergraduate students at Cal need to take and pass in order to graduate. The requirement was instituted in 1991 to introduce students to the diverse cultures of the United States through a comparative framework. Courses are offered in more than forty departments in many different disciplines at both the lower and upper division level. The Center provides resources for faculty and students on American Cultures.

Biology Scholars Program Has performed diversity research and published work evaluating this program's impact on graduation and performance of its members relative to a control group of matched Berkeley students. Further studies of several kinds are underway. Member of the Coalition of of Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science and Engineering -- a coalition of undergraduate student scholar programs.

Center on Culture, Immigration and Youth Violence Prevention The Center's mission is to research the causes and prevention of youth violence, especially among Asian Pacific Islander and Latino immigrant populations in Oakland. To convert this research into a reform agenda, the Center will serve as a gathering place for community members, policy makers and researchers to identify shared priorities, develop innovative strategies for studying these pressing concerns, and translate and disseminate information and knowledge into health and community practice.

Center for Health Research Established in 2001, the Center provided educational programs and research management services for social scientists and other investigators across the Berkeley campus as they address issues facing the health sector in the US and throughout the world.

Center for Information Technology Research in the Interests of Society (CITRIS) Centered at UC Berkeley, CITRIS incubates research on problems that have a major impact on the economy, quality of life, and future success of California: conserving energy; education; saving lives, property, and productivity in the wake of disasters; boosting transportation efficiency; advancing diagnosis and treatment of disease; and expanding business growth through much richer personalized information services.

Center for Latino Policy Research (CLPR) Established in 1989 in response to the research and policy challenges of limited educational and economic opportunities facing the Chicano and Latino population. Research activities and programs promoting and supporting policies affecting the Latino population in the United States remain the Center's focus. While CLPR supports research of varying concerns and issues, the current interest on immigration, access to higher education, and political participation predominates.

Center for Race and Gender (CRG) An interdisciplinary research and community outreach center at the University of California Berkeley dedicated to fostering explorations of race and gender and their intersections.

Center for Research on Education, Diversity and Excellence Grad School of Education. Funded from 1996-2004 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Center for Social Services Research General research support in the social sciences.

Diversity in Mathematics Education (DiME) Center UC Berkeley and the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) have embarked on a major partnership dealing with practical issues of diversity and middle school mathematics. NSF funding supports DiME Fellows in learning about issues of diversity.

Institute of Governmental Studies Advancing interdisciplinary research in American politics, government & public policy.

Institute of Human Development (IHD) Founded in 1927, IHD's primary mission is to foster the study of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that affect human development from birth through old age. What unites the members of our Institute is a commitment to viewing human biological, psychological, and sociocultural phenomena from a developmental perspective.

Institute of Industrial Relations Supports multidisciplinary research on all aspects of labor and employment relations.

Institute of International Studies (IIS) promotes interdisciplinary research in international, comparative, and policy studies on the Berkeley campus of the University of California.

Institute for the Study of Social Change (ISSC) ISSC was founded in 1976. Its research and training focuses on the multiple ways that social change processes socially construct and transform the categories of race, ethnicity, class, and gender. ISSC researchers use a combination of qualitative and quantitative social science research methods to undertake empirical investigations into critical social issues facing the nation, with a particular emphasis on the conditions of urban inequality and the potential for effective reform in California and western cities. ISSC also provides training and professional development to graduate and undergraduate students.

Institute of Urban and Regional Development (IURD) Serves faculty and students of the University of California, Berkeley, conducting research into processes of urban and regional growth and decline, and effects of governing policies on the patterns and processes of development

Mental Health & Social Welfare Research Group In addition to its research activities, ISSC sponsors the Graduate Field Research Training Program. Now in its thirtieth year, the Program provides an interdisciplinary research and training environment as a complement to graduate programs in the social sciences and professional schools.

Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) Has conducted research evaluating program efficacy and diversity student performance. Member of the Coalition of of Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science and Engineering -- a coalition of undergraduate student scholar programs.

Professional Development Program (PDP) Established in 1974 by faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, the Professional Development Program (PDP) promotes academic excellence and diversity for students and faculty from middle school through graduate school. PDP uses a strong research base to inform its recruitment and retention programs. PDP provides administrative and program support for Coalition of of Excellence and Diversity in Mathematics, Science and Engineering -- a coalition of undergraduate student scholar programs: Biology Scholars, College of Chemistry Scholars, McNair Scholars, Physics Scholars, the Multicultural Engineering Program, the Professional Development Program, and the Student Learning Center.

Survey Research Center (SRC) General survey support.

Townsend Center for the Humanities The Townsend Center distinguishes itself by its broad definition of the humanities, its vision of the university as an interlocking community that also reaches out to a larger public, and its role as an essential hub for Berkeley's vast store of humanities-related activities.

Warren Institute The recently launched Chief Justice Warren Institute on Race, Ethnicity and Diversity1 is a multidisciplinary, collaborative venture to produce research, research-based policy prescriptions, and curricular innovation on issues of racial and ethnic justice in California and the nation. The mission is to research topics in civil rights, race and ethnicity in a wide range of legal and public policy subject areas, providing valuable intellectual capital to public and private sector leaders, the media and the general public, while advancing scholarly understanding.
