Cal chancellor puts diversity on Cabinet level

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau is creating a top-level position in charge of developing a more diverse faculty and staff and a more open social climate throughout the campus. . . . Birgeneau also announced an academic project focusing on diversity in society as a whole. The six Cal faculty members initially assigned to the Berkeley Diversity Research Initiative will study diversity in health, democracy and education. "We should have to understand multiethnic and multicultural societies in the same way that as a physicist I want to understand the fundamental physical laws that govern our universe," said Birgeneau. Vice chancellor for equity and inclusion, a new post, to join campus leadership team; Selection of three BDRI faculty initiatives

Chancellor Birgeneau, in meeting with local press, also announces selection of three diversity-research initiatives to receive new FTEs. . . . Marking the culmination of a two-year effort, Birgeneau also announced the selection of three projects, from among a wide field of finalists, for funding under the new Berkeley Diversity Research Initiative (BDRI). Campus staff issues to take center stage at May 9 diversity forum

The forum was sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor and the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate. Senate Chair Alice Agogino notes that the entire campus community met last March in a similar forum, "Diversity in Action: Leading the Nation Through Research and Practice," where faculty issues were discussed. "A great deal of input and advice from the many staff who attended that forum" helped shape the launch of the faculty-focused Berkeley Diversity Research Initiative, she says. "The entire community's support and thought-provoking advice has been crucial to what I consider the current success of that initiative." In a similar spirit, while the focus of the forum is staff diversity, the input of all campus constituencies was encouraged. Read more . . . . New leadership role for campus in global research

Elite institutions from four continents gathered in Singapore recently to launch the 10-member International Alliance of Research Universities. . . Moreover, he says, the alliance "can catapult campus initiatives to international attention," citing Birgeneau's Berkeley Diversity Research Initiative (BDRI) as one obvious candidate. The initiative, he explains, "may appear to many here as a purely domestic enterprise. However, it turns out that for virtually all the countries represented in the alliance, multiculturalism and multi-ethnic relations are of prime importance. The BDRI can promote other campuses' research and teaching, which in turn can promote our own research and teaching in this area." Read more . . .

Annual $30,000 grant established for faculty whose research or service contributes to diversity and equal opportunity

Changes to the UC Academic Personnel Manual that went into effect last summer explicitly recognize diversity-related activities in faculty appointment and promotion. As stated in the revised policy: "These contributions to diversity can take a variety of forms including efforts to advance equitable access to education, public service that addresses the needs of California's diverse population, or research in a scholar's area of expertise that highlights inequalities." In keeping with this approach, a new grant - the Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence - will be presented annually to distinguished Berkeley faculty members "for distinctive contributions and auspicious success in enhancing diversity and equal opportunity," according to Angelica Stacy, associate vice provost for faculty equity. "This award recognizes Senate faculty members who have successfully demonstrated a commitment to excellence by providing leadership in research, education, and public service in building an equitable and diverse learning environment." Changes to the UC Academic Personnel Manual to recognize diversity-related activities

With strong support from the systemwide Academic Council, the University of California has just issued revisions to the Academic Personnel Manual (APM) - revisions that explicitly recognize diversity-related activities in faculty appointment and promotion. These long-sought changes to the APM are very important and likely to have an impact nationally, says Sheila O'Rourke, executive director for academic compliance at UC Office of the President. "They send the message that these activities are an important part of faculty teaching, service, and research. When a system the size of UC takes this step, other institutions will adopt similar language." Read more . . .

With the goal of developing and prioritizing a diversity-focused research agenda for the Berkeley campus, faculty, emeriti, staff, students, and alumni were invited to participate in a campuswide diversity forum on Thursday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Pauley Ballroom of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Student Union. Faculty diversity: the road ahead; Campus pursues new initiatives, but time is of the essence, says equity chief

"Ten years from now, there will be some 800 new ladder-rank faculty teaching classes and conducting research at Berkeley. That's the number of new hires that the campus anticipates making, to accommodate a major expansion in student enrollment and to make up for normal rates of attrition", says Angelica Stacy, associate vice provost for faculty equity. Who will occupy those faculty positions? In 2013, will the Academic Senate look more like the state of California in all its diversity? And will women and minority faculty hold positions of campus leadership more nearly resembling their proportion of the population? Read more . . .
